The majority of ice loss was from 2005 through 2007 and can be mostly explained by changing wind and ocean currents pushing the Arctic ice into the North Atlantic where it then melts. It is a misconception by most that the additional melting in 2007 occurred while the ice sat in place in the Arctic. Arctic currents are beginning to return to their primarily circular pattern resulting in ice increase in 2008 and further projected ice increase in 2009.
