Well, not really. That's just a humorous line from the movie Stripes, when John loses his car, his job, and his girl in the same day. But it does have a tiny nugget of relevance as we end this first day of autumn.
Where did the summer go, and why does it run away faster as I age? Summer used to be lengthy, languid, moving like thick syrup through the heat of the day and the humid calm of the night.
Now it sprints from the end of April, building speed so that when it kicks off in June the momentum carries it quickly through September, a fleeting, fast-lane to fall.
Summer, we hardly knew ye.
