Jason Riley, writing in the The Wall Street Journal online, pens an interesting piece on Rahm Emanuel. Riley interviewed Emanuel during a layover at the Detroit airport, before Emanuel had officially accepted the position as Barack Obama's Chief of Staff.
It's a bit refreshing to hear that the plan would be to accomplish the things that were promised during the campaign, because after all, isn't that the reason why people voted for you?
It sounds like there would be some quick-win opportunities taken almost immediately, such as rollbacks to the most onerous and ugly of the Bush administration policies, coupled with a longer term strategy. Some of the quick hits? Health care for children, tax reform for the middle class, and an economic stimulus package. Sound familiar?
Emanuel: ..."the lesson is to do what you got elected to do," said Mr. Emanuel. "Do what you talked about on the campaign. If you got elected, that's what people expect. Don't go off on tangents where part of your party is demanding an ideological litmus test. Neither of those things was part of the campaign."
This should be fun to watch, and even more satisfying than just seeing wrongheaded policies reversed. Fasten your seat belts, America - there's a new driver getting ready to pass on the left.
