Rock (Bottom) Lobster

One of the few bright spots of this stinky economy is the rapidly dropping price of lobster. Well, bright unless you're part of the faltering lobster industry.

Following the theory of supply and demand, penny-pinching consumers are cutting back on extravagant foodstuffs, like lobster, which is causing the demand for Maine lobster to tank, so to speak. Maine supplies about 80% of the domestic lobster supply.

The credit crunch is also hampering lobster processors, and several have closed down, which makes it even more difficult for lobstermen. Huge stockpiles of lobster that can't be processed further drive down prices.

Sadly, lobster is going for the same price per pound as bologna in some locations. I hope we don't start seeing folks wearing bologna bibs.
