Special Interests

In any discussion of government or politics, eventually the topic of "special interests" arises, including the influence they may (or may not) have over those in power. So this little story is a maddening example.

Last week, President-elect (and known Chicago dog lover) Barack Obama caused quite the stir when he stopped in to Ben's Chili Bowl in DC for lunch. The media was a-twitter (via Twitter??) that such a powerful man would actually have lunch with the commoners, with much speculation about the deeper meaning of it all.

To his credit, Obama responded to the "deeper meaning" thread by rolling his eyes while commenting something like, "I just wanted a hot dog!" in that subdued but exasperated tone he sometimes exhibits.

Anyway, this whole thing could have come and gone with nary a raised eyebrow, but in the interest of "special interest", the following press release was forthcoming: National Hot Dog & Sausage Council Says President-Elect Obama’s Historic Trip to Famous DC Hot Dog Restaurant Reflects Excellent and All-American Taste in Cuisine.
Seriously.

Quoting the release - Washington, DC – President-Elect Barack Obama’s visit to the DC landmark Ben’s Chili Bowl for a half-smoke yesterday reflects his excellent and all-American taste in cuisine.
According to National Hot Dog & Sausage Council President Janet M. Riley. “His stop yesterday shows that while the most sophisticated chefs in America may be vying for his palate, American hot dogs and sausages were the ‘wieners’ this weekend in Washington.”

I think we know who the real "wieners" are here.
