Why has John McCain gone from a straight-talker in 2000 to a purveyor of lies, half-truths, and shrill talking points this time around? He seems to be at peace with this choice, one that a lot of politicians face as they run for office, but McCain has always promised to avoid it, saying that his reputation is more worthy than winning an election.
McCain spokesman Brian Rogers has an idea: “We recognize it’s not going to be 2000 again,” he said, alluding to the media’s swooning coverage of McCain’s ill-fated crusade against then-Gov. George W. Bush and the GOP establishment. “But he lost then. We’re running a campaign to win. And we’re not too concerned about what the media filter tries to say about it.”
