The leading psychologist's organization in the US, the American Psychological Association, has voted overwhelmingly to ban its members from participating in government torture programs in Guantanamo Bay and other military detention sites.
In a bit of self-directed rationalization, the association will finally admit they have a problem, and move closer to the positions taken several years ago by both the American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association.
Whether or not members are held accountable for any ethical violations once this policy goes into effect in August 2009 remains to be seen. There are members of the association that are asking for the policy to be implemented sooner.
