John McCain, out changing his tune on the economy for about the 2oth time this week, now opines that the head of the SEC is to blame for some of the recent events in the financial sector, accusing him of things akin to being asleep at the wheel.
McCain, who believes using force is a first resort, said that if he was President, he'd fire the SEC chief. Boom.
Only one problem with that, John. The SEC is a regulatory agency, and while the President can remove regulatory personnel for misconduct or malfeasance, you can't dismiss them over policy differences. There's a reason for that - you don't want political hacks pushing out regulators who happen to be enforcing the laws and regs on the books, even if it IS inconvenient for the administration. In other words, you're not supposed to do what Sarah Palin has done in Alaska.
McCain should solve this financial crisis like he usually solves these kinds of problems - have the United States marry a very wealthy younger woman.
