Scores of buildings were evacuated, streets were roped off, and the local explosive ordinance disposal chaps were called into action after water department crews working nearby found a suspicious object. It was the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, famously used to slay a killer rabbit in the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

The public was never in danger, save a healthy measure of overreaction.
