Is Promoting Home Ownership a Bad Idea?

Rob Horning has an interesting perspective on the concept of home ownership, and how the aggressive march toward that goal may have contributed to the global financial crisis.

He also suggests that making changes that allows more people to stay in their homes might not be the best answer in the long term.

He quotes Felix Salmon - The last thing we need right now is a resurgence in homeownership. Too many people own their homes already, including a lot of families who really shouldn’t. Let’s start thinking in terms of affordable housing, and not in terms of home equity.
