Palin - The Real Rape Kit Controversy

By now, we've all heard that when Sarah Palin was mayor of Wasilla, her administration had a policy of billing rape victims for the cost of the rape kits used to collect evidence used in part to convict the attackers.

In May 2ooo, the Alaska legislature, with the support of Governor Tony Knowles, enacted a law that provided the kits free, along with a couple of other benefits important to rape victims - testing for sexually transmitted disease, and access to emergency contraception.

Could it be that the real issue here isn't about the money, or the desire to either get insurance companies or the attackers to pay for the kits, but rather the will of a highly-religious, anti-abortion mayor to ensure that her town in no way contributed to a possible abortion, regardless of the reason?
