Poo Trap: I'm Intrigued - My Dog, Not So Much
Normally a contraption like this wouldn't even warrant consideration by a dog lover. The other pups would ridicule Rover and forever damage his self-esteem.Bringing home a rescue dog that continues to squeeze out biscuits on the dining room floor months later has led me to look for alternate solutions.
Like the Poo Trap.
Now if someone will just tell me how to make this work with Doggie Depends.

Dogs Rock
Here's a pic of Allie, a rescue dog we're test-driving this week to see if she's a fit for our nutty clan. We're big dog fans, and all of our canines have had different personalities and brought individual measures of joy into our lives.
Gene Weingarten, in a Washington Post article, talks about his pal Murphy, and much of what he says resonates.
Money quote: My point here is that -- and I say this before a potentially hostile audience -- we must always remember that dogs are, in the end, only dogs. To paraphrase the British writer Frank Skinner, never expect too much from an animal that is surprised by its own farts.

Dogs that Blog
I was toying with the idea of setting up a blog for enlightened posts by our recent rescue, Radar, an adorable mix who came to live with us about six weeks ago.
Sadly, I'm not the first super-genius to stumble upon this concept, judging from the complete lack of availability of domains and / or blog names using various combinations of dog, blog, DogBlog, BlogDog, and so on.
I'm brilliant, but I'm also very slow.

Scare Your Dog
We once had a huge black Lab that shook, quivered, and drooled every time it rained. Then we had a dog that bit your face off if you glanced at him funny. Now we pal around with a beagle / collie mix who is pretty easy-going. We can't have that.
We should buy one of these things for our Roomba vacuum - a Horny Toad Cozy.
Imagine what a poor, innocent pooch would be thinking when the motorized prehistoric sucking machine came spinning around the corner, brushes twirling and sonar beeping. Feets, don't fail me now!
It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye.

Cancer Sniffing Dog
Here's another reason to love dogs more than cats. A 10-year old mixed breed Collie in England started pestering owner Maureen Burns, sniffing her breath and rubbing against her right breast.
Ms. Burns found a small lump in her breast that wasn't detected by mammogram. She convinced her doctor to perform a biopsy, and sure enough, the lump came back malignant.
After surgery and radiation treatment, Ms. Burns is doing fine, and her prognosis is good.
This makes me wonder what our dog is really after when he sniffs my crotch.

Fido vs. Fossil Fuels
Even though gasoline prices have plummeted recently, it's probably unwise to breathe a sigh of relief, since we all realize that prices will continue to rise in the long term as growing world demand outpaces a dwindling supply.
Oil companies have begun touting technological advances that allow them to extract precious drops of oil from deep inside rocks and shale. That seems like a very expensive, labor-intensive effort that would not be undertaken if the easier alternative of sticking a pipe in the ground was available. The truth remains unspoken - we're running out of oil.
Enter DogPoweredScooter.com, a site seemingly designed by a 10th grader using Microsoft FrontPage. What the page lacks in modern design it makes up for by the sheer volume of words WRITTEN ALL IN CAPS.
It's not just dog powered scooters here, either. They have dog powered trikes, dog powered skateboards, and coming soon, dog powered folding bicycles. I'm guessing they won't fold while you're in transit, but I can't be certain.
The obvious question here is what powers the dog, and for how long? Do we recycle methane that comes out the tailpipe, or burn turd nuggets in the Eukanuba converter?
We own a pudgy little freak of nature that we saved at the animal shelter, and I'm not sure how he would feel about this. Mojo is part basset hound and part American bulldog (we think), with a massive head perched on a thick neck. Mojo defies gravity by not tipping forward, his long, muscled trunk held by four stubby little legs with huge feet. He's about 18 inches tall and weighs 60 pounds. An ottoman with teeth.
Strapping him to a skateboard or scooter essentially makes me the human sidecar in some Stephen King-inspired Cujo propulsion experiment. Checking out the pics and videos that are meant to assuage my fears actually stokes my panic.
I had better performing brakes on my Big Wheel when I was 5. Those things are supposed to hold when Mojo spots a passing squirrel or the neighbor's nappy Persian devil-cat? I think not.
The center of gravity seems a bit high, too. I realize that I'm a computer engineer and not a real engineer, but physics is physics. If Mojo takes off and I need to make a quick turn to avoid a tree or small child, the last thing that will go through my head will be Newton's theory of vectors and scalars.
